Barnaby trudged along the dusty lane, the midday sun beating down on his already weary shoulders. His cart, laden with the usual assortment of wilting greens and bruised apples, rattled with each uneven step of his donkey. He tried to whistle a cheerful tune, but it came out as a reedy, uncertain sound, lost in the vastness of the fields. The memory of the previous day’s act, the quick, furtive snatch of that impossibly vibrant purple banana from Silas’s humble stall, still pricked at his conscience like a thousand tiny thorns. He’d told himself it was a moment of desperation, a necessary gamble in his perpetual struggle against hunger. He’d sold it for a handful of coins that barely covered the cost of his donkey’s feed, and now, that brief flicker of relief had curdled into a gnawing anxiety.

He rounded a bend, and his heart gave a sudden, unwelcome lurch. There, standing on the edge of the market square, was a small gathering of people, their faces turned upwards in admiration. And in the center of it all, held aloft by a man with a flamboyant silk cravat and an air of self-importance, was a banana. Not just any banana, but *the* banana. Its skin was the deep, rich hue of amethyst, a color so startling and unnatural that it seemed to pulse with its own inner light. Mr. Abernathy, the notoriously eccentric collector of all things peculiar, was beaming, his chest puffed out like a proud peacock.

Barnaby’s breath hitched. He felt a cold sweat prickle his forehead despite the heat. He’d hoped, prayed even, that the banana would be lost in the shuffle, that its uniqueness would be overlooked, or that it would simply vanish into the anonymity of some distant pantry. But here it was, on full display, a beacon of his transgression. He instinctively pulled his cart a little closer to a shadowed stall selling cheap pottery, hoping to blend into the background.
