The air in the convention center crackled with a thousand different kinds of energy. It was the Grand Tech Expo, the Super Bowl of innovation, and I, Alex, with my little Glow-Bot humming softly in its protective case, felt like a single firefly about to challenge a supernova. This was it. The culmination of everything – the late nights, the spilled coffee, the gnawing fear that MegaCorp would swallow me whole. My stomach did a nervous flip-flop, a familiar sensation that usually preceded a big presentation, but this time, it was amplified by the sheer scale of it all. Booths stretched out like an endless, glittering cityscape, each one a desperate plea for attention. And there, looming like a metallic mountain range, was MegaCorp’s fortress of a display. Their logo, a stark, imposing ‘M’, seemed to mock my humble setup tucked away in a corner.

“Deep breaths, Alex,” I muttered to myself, adjusting the collar of my jacket. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I pictured the Glow-Bot, its smooth, ergonomic design, its gentle, helpful light. It wasn’t just a gadget; it was a promise. A promise of easier nights for worried parents, of brighter paths for those who walked alone, of a little more wonder in the everyday. And MegaCorp, with their soulless, overpriced gadgets, had no place in that promise. Their offer, so obscene it felt like a joke, still echoed in my mind. A fortune, they’d said, for the patent, for my ideas. But the price was the Glow-Bot’s soul, its accessibility. They wanted to lock it away, to sell it at a price only the privileged could afford, turning my dream into another exclusive toy for the wealthy. I’d walked away, and now, standing here, the weight of that decision felt heavier than ever.

My small booth, strategically placed near a bustling thoroughfare, was a stark contrast to MegaCorp’s sprawling, multi-level behemoth. I’d poured every ounce of my remaining capital into making it inviting, a splash of vibrant color against the muted blues and grays that dominated the hall. Lush green plants spilled from recycled pots, and a backdrop of soft, diffused light made the Glow-Bot, even in its case, look like a precious jewel. I’d even commissioned a local artist to paint a mural depicting the Glow-Bot helping people in various scenarios – a child reading under its gentle glow, an elderly person navigating a dark hallway, a lost hiker finding their way. It was a story, not just a product.
