Chapter 9
Unconventional Wisdom
The Performer recognizes Kito's 'foolishness' as unconventional thinking. He decides to trust the boy's instincts, blending his own theatrical flair with Kito's unique approach to create a plan.
The Performer, his usually vibrant cloak dusted with soot, watched Kito with a new kind of gaze. It wasn’t the usual amused twinkle he reserved for the boy’s impulsive antics, nor the gentle concern he felt when Kito’s energy threatened to spill into trouble. This was a thoughtful, searching look, as if he were peering beyond the surface to the very core of the spirited child. He had seen Kito’s mind work, not in the straight, predictable lines of common sense, but in a wild, untamed scribble that, surprisingly, sometimes landed on the most unexpected truths.
“Foolishness,” the Performer murmured, not to Kito, but to himself, the word tasting strange on his tongue. He remembered Kito’s initial, frantic suggestion to simply “throw water everywhere!” – a plan so broad, so lacking in strategy, it had made the elders sigh. But then he’d also seen the way Kito’s eyes had darted, noticing the subtle shift in the wind, the peculiar way the flames licked at the old willow, the almost hungry way the fire seemed to devour certain materials. It wasn't foolishness; it was a different kind of seeing. It was an unrefined, raw observation, unburdened by the rigid expectations of what should be.
Kito, meanwhile, was still buzzing with a nervous energy that had replaced his earlier terror. The Performer’s steady presence, the way he’d moved with such confident grace even as the flames danced nearby, had been a beacon. And the Rooster’s cryptic words, though still a puzzle, had planted a seed of something deeper than just fear. He felt a strange pull, a sense that the answers weren’t in the usual places, not in the buckets and the frantic shouts, but somewhere… else.
