The air in Lord Valerius’s study was thick with the scent of aged parchment and something else, something wild and untamed, like the scent of rain on dry earth. It was a stark contrast to the perfumed, sterile air of my own chambers, a constant reminder of the gilded cage I inhabited. I clutched the worn velvet of my cloak, the rough wool a welcome anchor against the tremor in my hands. This was it. The precipice. I had come seeking a dangerous alliance, one forged not in treaties or vows, but in the shared shadow of a growing darkness.

Lord Valerius stood by the tall casement window, his back to me, silhouetted against the dying light of the afternoon sun. He was a figure of quiet intensity, a man who seemed to carry the weight of centuries within his slender frame. The rumors that clung to him like cobwebs – that he was mad, or cursed, or worse – seemed utterly absurd in this moment. Here, surrounded by his books and his solitary pursuits, he radiated an aura of profound, almost mournful, wisdom.

“You are late, Your Highness,” he said, his voice a low rumble that resonated in the stillness. He didn’t turn, and I wondered if he had heard my approach, or if he had simply known.
