Chapter 7
The Foreign Prince's Gaze
The foreign prince, her betrothed, arrives. His presence intensifies the political pressure and Aurelia's unease, making her secret meetings with Valerius even more perilous.
The air in the throne room, usually thick with the scent of beeswax and faded tapestries, now vibrated with a different kind of tension. It was the scent of foreign silks and the unspoken weight of alliances, all embodied by the man who stood before my father. Prince Theron of Eldoria. He was precisely as the royal portrait had depicted him: tall, with a hawk-like profile and eyes the color of a winter sky. But the likeness ended there. The painted image had captured a certain stern nobility; the man before me radiated a cool, almost predatory assessment, his gaze lingering a moment too long on my face.
My own heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a counterpoint to the measured cadence of the courtiers’ whispers. He was not merely a suitor; he was a statement.
After the official greetings, I was presented. Theron took my hand, his touch cool and dry, his thumb tracing a slow circle on the back of my glove. It felt less like a gesture of affection and more like a claim. He offered a brief, almost dismissive bow, and then his eyes met mine, sharp and unnervingly direct. "Princess Aurelia," he said, his voice a low rumble, carrying an accent I’d only ever heard in hushed tones from visiting dignitaries. "It is an honor to finally meet the jewel of Eldoria."
