Chapter 4
Echoes of Disgrace
Aurelia delves into Valerius's family history, seeking to understand the rumors. She uncovers fragmented accounts of past betrayals and a lingering stain on their once-noble name.
The royal library was a sanctuary, a labyrinth of knowledge where the weight of my crown felt a fraction lighter. Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight that pierced the arched windows, illuminating rows upon rows of silent stories. The Valerius family, I discovered, had once been titans, their influence woven into the very fabric of our early prosperity. Their crest, a proud gryphon rampant, had adorned banners of victory and sealed treaties of peace. But as the centuries bled into one another, the entries grew sparser, more guarded. A single line here, a cryptic omission there. It was as if the chroniclers themselves had been instructed to tread carefully, to gloss over the darker chapters.
