The air in the study was thick with unspoken things, a palpable tension that clung to the velvet curtains and the polished mahogany of the desk. Valerius sat opposite me, his usual scholarly composure frayed at the edges, his eyes, usually so steady, held a tempest of emotions I was only just beginning to understand. He had finally agreed to tell me everything, to lay bare the secrets that had bound him for so long, and in doing so, he was asking for a trust that felt heavier than any crown.

"My family," he began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the quiet room, "was once as prominent as any in this kingdom, perhaps more so. The name Valerius was synonymous with wisdom, with influence, with… power." He paused, his gaze falling to his hands, clasped tightly on the worn leather of his journal. "But power, as you know, Princess, can be a dangerous mistress."

I leaned forward, my own hands resting on the cool wood of the desk, my heart a frantic bird against my ribs. This was it. The culmination of weeks of clandestine meetings, of whispered hopes and fears exchanged through ink and parchment. This was the truth I had been searching for, the missing piece of the puzzle that was Valerius.
