The desert sun, a relentless molten eye, beat down on the ancient stones of the palace courtyard. Emily, her skin flushed a delicate rose despite the shade of an ornate awning, felt a tremor of something akin to awe. She was walking with Prince Tariq, his hand a warm, firm presence at the small of her back, a gesture of casual possession that sent a strange thrill through her. The air was thick with the scent of jasmine and something deeper, earthier, that she couldn’t quite place – the perfume of centuries, perhaps, or the very essence of this land.

They had been speaking for hours, their conversation weaving through tales of her small town in Ohio, her dreams of becoming a writer, and his own youthful wanderings before the weight of his destiny had settled upon him. He listened with an intensity that made her feel as if she were the only person in the world, his dark eyes, flecked with gold, holding hers with an unnerving directness.

“Your spirit,” Tariq said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate in her bones, “is like a desert bloom, Emily. Unexpected, resilient, and beautiful.”
