The air in the palace hung thick and sweet, a heady perfume of jasmine and something richer, more resinous, that Emily couldn’t quite place. It was a scent that spoke of ancient wealth, of secrets kept behind carved sandalwood doors. She’d been here, in this gilded cage, for a week now, and the initial shock had begun to ebb, replaced by a disorienting blend of awe and a gnawing unease.

Prince Tariq, when he wasn’t whisking her away on impromptu excursions through the sprawling palace grounds – a labyrinth of sun-drenched courtyards, whispering fountains, and gardens bursting with impossibly vibrant bougainvillea – was a whirlwind of meetings. Here, she was introduced to the matriarch of the royal family, a woman of immense presence, her eyes sharp and intelligent behind a veil of delicate gold embroidery. The Princess Mother, as she was respectfully addressed, regarded Emily with a gaze that was both assessing and, surprisingly, kind. She spoke to Emily in fluid, melodic English, her voice like the rustle of silk.
