The air in the palace garden hung thick with the scent of jasmine and something else, something musky and exotic that Emily couldn't quite place. It was a perfume of old money and ancient lineage, a stark contrast to the faint whiff of chlorine that clung to her from her afternoon swim. She smoothed down her simple cotton dress, feeling absurdly out of place amongst the shimmering silks and intricate embroidery that adorned the women around her. Then, a voice, smooth as polished obsidian, cut through the polite murmur of conversation.

“You look as if you’ve wandered in from another world.”

Emily turned. He was tall, impossibly so, with eyes the color of strong coffee and a smile that crinkled at the corners, hinting at a warmth that belied his regal bearing. Prince Tariq. He wore a crisp, tailored suit that spoke of effortless elegance, yet his gaze was direct, unpretentious.
