The car ride was a blur of hushed tones and forced smiles. My parents sat in the front, their backs rigid, while I was relegated to the rear, a silent observer of a conversation I was no longer privy to. The restaurant was the same one from that fateful Friday, the air thick with the scent of garlic and simmering sauces. As we were shown to our table, I noticed a familiar figure already seated in a secluded booth, his dark sunglasses obscuring his eyes. It was the Emissary, the man who had so casually attempted to purchase my future. My stomach churned.
"Emily," my father began, his voice strained, "we need to talk. Properly. No more hiding, no more eavesdropping." He gestured for me to sit, his gaze unwavering. "This gentleman," he indicated the Emissary, "has made a… very generous offer. An offer that would secure our family's future, and yours, beyond anything we could have imagined."
My mother finally spoke, her voice barely a whisper, "He says you are destined for something… greater, Emily. Something beyond our understanding."
