Chapter 27
Episode 27
I quietly snuck down the back stairway and hoped the door wouldn't make any noise as I made My way to the top of the street and to the corner market for a snack
The thumping in my chest finally began to subside, replaced by a frantic urge to escape. The weight of what I’d overheard, the sheer audacity of it all, pressed down on me. I crept down the back stairs, each creak of the wood a potential betrayal. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs as I eased the door open, praying it wouldn't betray my escape with a loud groan. The cool evening air was a welcome balm against my flushed skin. I didn't dare look back, didn't dare imagine the scene I was leaving behind. My feet carried me with a determined urgency towards the familiar glow of the corner market, a beacon of normalcy in the swirling chaos of my thoughts. A bag of chips and a sugary soda felt like a necessary, if inadequate, antidote to the taste of impending royalty and the chilling suggestion that I wasn't entirely my own.
