The spokesperson's words, dripping with honeyed persuasion, stung more than his earlier insults. He leaned forward, his gaze fixed on the wall behind which I was undoubtedly hiding, as if he could see right through it. "She is… unique," he purred, his voice lowering conspiratorially. "Not like the others. Not theirs. Her spirit, her intelligence… it is wasted here. She belongs in a place where she can truly flourish, where her potential can be nurtured. A place like ours." He gestured vaguely, as if indicating a distant, glittering kingdom. "We see a future for her, a future far grander than anything this… provincial life can offer. She is destined for more. And we are willing to ensure that destiny is met." His tone shifted, becoming almost pleading. "Think, sir," he implored my father, "of the opportunities. Not just for her, but for your family. This is not simply an offer; it is an investment in her future. An investment we are eager to make." The implication hung heavy in the air: that my family was holding me back, that I was a diamond in the rough, tragically misplaced. He was trying to convince my father, and by extension, me, that I was somehow fundamentally different, and that this difference was a commodity to be traded.
