Chapter 21
Episode 21
Your Father playing the polite diplomat tells the tall figure no! Emily will not be taken away
The hushed tones of my father’s voice, usually so full of easy laughter, were laced with a diplomatic carefulness that sent a shiver down my spine. From my perch, tucked away in the shadows of the landing, I could just make out the imposing silhouette of the man in the long, flowing robes, his face obscured by the dark lenses of his sunglasses. He spoke in a low, resonant rumble, a language I didn’t understand, but the intent was clear in the way my father’s shoulders tensed.
Then, my father replied, his voice smooth as polished wood. He spoke in English, the words carefully chosen, each syllable carrying a weight I’d never heard before. He was thanking the visitor, expressing his profound appreciation for the… *offer*, he called it. But then came the gentle, yet firm, refusal. “She is too young,” he said, his voice unwavering. “Her path is here, with us. She will not be taken away.” There was a pause, a pregnant silence that stretched into an eternity. I imagined the man’s unseen eyes fixed on my father, a silent assessment passing between them. My father’s response was a quiet, steadfast wall, a polite but unyielding ‘no’. He spoke of family, of education, of a life yet to be lived on her own terms. It was a masterclass in diplomacy, a gentle but absolute deflection. The air in the hallway seemed to thicken, laden with unspoken implications, but my father, ever the protector, stood his ground.
