It felt like a dream, a vivid, intoxicating dream she had woken from abruptly, finding herself back on solid, familiar ground.

Her fingers, once adorned with the weight of a magnificent sapphire ring, now fumbled with the coins for the self-checkout. The cashier, a tired-looking teenager with a nose ring, offered a perfunctory nod. No bowing, no hushed reverence, just the quiet transaction of everyday life. Emily offered a small, genuine smile. This was real. This was hers.

Back in her small apartment, the scent of stale coffee and old paperbacks greeted her like an old friend. She unpacked the single suitcase, the few items she’d taken with her seeming almost alien now – a silk scarf in a shade of sapphire that mirrored the lost ring, a small, intricately carved wooden bird that had been a parting gift from a sympathetic lady-in-waiting.
