Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Marcus returns home from the diner meeting, shaken by Thompson's threats and the watching figure. The next day, he struggles through school and practice under Gerald's watchful eye. Lena presses him to confide in Coach Harris, but Marcus resists. After practice, Thompson summons him again, this time with a new escalation: a contract binding Marcus to Gerald's program for a full season and beyond, with a signing bonus that feels like a trap. Marcus refuses to sign. Thompson threatens his mother. Marcus leaves in turmoil, only to find Lena waiting outside, having followed him. As they argue, a car pulls up—Thompson's men. They grab Marcus and shove him inside. The chapter ends with the car speeding away, Lena screaming his name.
The night air clung to Marcus like a wet shirt as he hurried away from the diner, his sneakers slapping against the cracked sidewalk. The street stretched ahead, empty and dim, the faulty streetlamp still flickering where the shadowy figure had stood. He didn't look back. He couldn't. Every nerve in his body screamed at him to run, but he forced himself to walk, to keep his pace steady, to not give whoever might be watching the satisfaction of seeing him panic.
The walk home felt longer than it ever had. Each shadow seemed to breathe, each distant car headlight a pair of eyes tracking his movement. He kept his hands jammed in his jacket pockets, one wrapped around the new phone Gerald had given him, the other clenched into a fist. By the time he reached his front door, his knuckles ached.
He slipped inside as quietly as he could. The house was dark, his mother's shift at the nursing home still running late. He didn't turn on any lights. He just stood in the hallway, letting his eyes adjust to the gloom, listening to the hum of the refrigerator and the distant tick of the living room clock.
