Marcus arrives at the Lincoln Street gym for the game, only to find a crowd of scouts and Mr. Thompson waiting. He plays under immense pressure, scoring well, but is then told the price has changed—he must commit to Gerald's program or face consequences. Lena shows up, having followed him, and together they face Thompson's ultimatum.
The next morning came too quickly. Marcus had barely slept, the photograph of his mother burned into his mind like a brand. He stared at the ceiling as the gray light of dawn crept through his window, each minute dragging him closer to the game he had agreed to play.
His mother knocked on his door. "Marcus? You're going to be late for school."
"I'm not feeling well," he called back, his voice flat.
