Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Marcus is locked in the warehouse. He escapes through a broken window and runs home, but his mother confronts him about the missing money. He lies, then confides in Lena, who urges him to go to the police. Instead, Marcus decides to meet Mr. Thompson's contact, hoping to gain leverage. The meeting reveals the man is a recruiter for a shady AAU program. Marcus refuses the offer, but Mr. Thompson threatens his family. Marcus agrees to play one game for the program to protect them, buying himself time.
The slam of the door echoed through the empty warehouse like a gunshot. Marcus stood frozen, the dead phone still in his hand, his breath coming in short, sharp bursts. The darkness pressed in around him, thick and suffocating. He could hear his own heartbeat, loud and frantic, drowning out everything else.
He forced himself to move. He crossed to the door and grabbed the handle. Locked. He pulled harder. Nothing. He slammed his shoulder against the wood, once, twice, three times. The door didn't budge. It was solid steel, industrial grade. He was trapped.
Marcus stepped back, his mind racing. The warehouse had windows, he remembered that much. High up, near the ceiling, but maybe there was another way out. He felt along the wall, his fingers finding rough concrete and rusted metal. The single bulb cast a weak circle of light, leaving the corners of the building in deep shadow.
