Chapter 20: The Waiting Game
Marcus and Lena spend a tense day in the safe house, trying to find normalcy while waiting for news. Detective Morales returns with troubling developments about the leak inside the department, and a new message from the Architect raises the stakes, forcing Marcus to make a difficult choice about trust and survival.
The morning stretched like a held breath. Marcus stood at the kitchen window, watching the sun climb higher over the trees, painting the world in shades of gold and green. It should have been beautiful. Instead, it felt like a countdown he couldn't see.
Lena cleared the breakfast dishes, her movements deliberate, almost mechanical. She was trying to stay busy, he knew. Trying to pretend that this was just another day, that they weren't trapped in a stranger's house waiting for a threat to materialize.
Officer Park had retreated to the living room, where she sat in an armchair facing the front door, her service weapon visible at her hip. She didn't speak much, but her presence was a constant reminder that they weren't alone.
