Chapter 15: The Trap Closes
Marcus and Lena are taken to the police station, where Detective Morales confronts them about the new threat. Marcus insists on handling the Friday night warehouse meeting alone, but Lena refuses to let him face it without her. A tense negotiation with Morales ends with a plan: Marcus will go to the warehouse wearing a wire. But when he arrives, he finds not Thompson's henchman, but Coach Harris, who claims he was trying to protect Marcus all along. The chapter ends with Harris handing Marcus a burner phone, saying 'The real threat hasn't shown himself yet.'
The police cruiser's headlights cut through the darkness of Springfield's streets as Detective Morales drove toward the station. Marcus sat in the back seat, Lena's hand warm in his, the weight of the threatening message burning in his pocket. He hadn't told Morales about the text yet. He needed time to think.
The car turned onto Glenstone Avenue, the familiar storefronts sliding past in a blur of neon and shadow. Marcus watched the reflections dance on the window, his mind racing through possibilities. The warehouse. Friday night. The same place where Thompson had held him. Whoever sent that message wanted him back there, alone, vulnerable.
"You two have been quiet back there," Morales said, her eyes meeting his in the rearview mirror. "What aren't you telling me?"
