Chapter 2

The Pogodozer's Promise

Anna is thrilled with the pogodozer and dreams of shared adventures. But Mark, fiercely protective of his secrets, refuses to share it, taking it for himself and pushing Anna away.

Anna’s eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat. Before her, gleaming under the midday sun, sat a contraption of such magnificent, monstrous proportions that it defied belief. It was a pogodozer, a colossal, earth-moving machine, painted a garish, offensive shade of purple that screamed General Stokes. How it had arrived, or why their sworn enemy would bestow such a gift, was a mystery that tickled Anna’s adventurous spirit. She imagined the possibilities, the shared quests, the sheer joy of conquering impossible terrain with this behemoth at their side.

“Mark! Serina! Look at this!” she called, her voice brimming with an excitement that usually rubbed off on her siblings. Serina, ever the eager participant in Anna’s enthusiastic pronouncements, bounded over, her eyes mirroring Anna’s awe. Mark, however, remained a statue by the doorway, his usual guarded expression firmly in place.

“It’s… big,” Serina offered, her small voice filled with wonder.

“Big doesn’t even begin to cover it, sweetie,” Anna laughed, running a hand over the cool, smooth metal of the pogodozer’s massive scoop. “Imagine what we could do with this! We could bounce across the Whispering Gorge! We could bounce for fun anytime on Mount Cinder! This is incredible!”

Her gaze, however, flickered to Mark. He hadn’t moved, hadn’t offered a single word of shared enthusiasm. That familiar knot of frustration began to tighten in his stomach. Mark, bless his secretive heart, was a master of keeping his cards close to his chest. Even when they’d pulled him from the brink of countless dangers, he’d offered little in the way of explanation, less in the way of gratitude. He lived in a world of his own making, a fortress of unspoken thoughts and hidden motives.

“Come on, Mark,” Anna coaxed, her voice softening. “This is amazing! Think of the adventures we could have, all of us together.”

Mark finally stirred, a slow, deliberate movement that felt like a dismissal. He walked towards the pogodozer, his eyes scanning its formidable frame, not with wonder, but with a possessive intensity. “It’s mine,” he stated, his voice flat, devoid of any hint of sharing.

Anna blinked, taken aback. “Yours? Mark, it was delivered here, to all of us. It’s a gift, a… a surprise.”

“It’s mine,” he repeated, his jaw tightening. He reached out, his hand landing firmly on the handel. “And I’m not sharing it.”

A wave of disbelief washed over Anna. “What? Mark, that’s not fair! We always share everything. You know that.”

“Not this,” he said, his gaze hardening. He climbed into the driver’s seat, his movements quick, almost aggressive. The sheer size of the machine seemed to amplify his already formidable presence. He settled in, his hands gripping the controls with a fierce possessiveness.

“Mark, please!” Anna pleaded, stepping closer. “Don’t do this. We can figure out a way to share it. It’s too big for just one person anyway.”

But Mark wasn’t listening. He was already operating the controls, his focus entirely inward. The massive engine roared to life, a deep, guttural sound that vibrated through the ground. Then, with a sudden, jarring lurch, the pogodozer began to move. Mark, his face a mask of grim determination, didn’t look at Anna. He just pushed forward, nudging her aside as he maneuvered the colossal machine.

“Mark!” Anna cried out, stumbling back. Her heart ached with a familiar sting of rejection. It wasn’t just about the pogodozer; it was about the wall he constantly built between them, a wall that seemed to grow higher with every passing day.

Then, a shriek of pure terror sliced through the air. Anna’s head snapped towards the sound. Serina! Their younger sister, who had been watching the unfolding drama with wide, anxious eyes, had somehow found herself in the path of General Stokes’ infamous Van of Pain, a nightmarish vehicle designed for maximum discomfort and distress. It was a vile, spiky contraption that had been the source of many a narrow escape for them. Serina was caught, her small body pinned against the unforgiving spikes, her cries a desperate plea for help.

“Serina!” Anna screamed, her fear for her sister eclipsing all other emotions. She scrambled towards the pogodozer, her mind racing. She had to get to Serina, had to use this machine to free her.

“Mark, stop! Serina’s in trouble!” Anna yelled, reaching for the controls.

But Mark, his face contorted with a stubborn refusal, pushed her away. “I’ve got this,” he grunted, his hands flying over the levers. He seemed to be deliberately ignoring Serina’s plight, his focus solely on asserting his ownership of the pogodozer. With a sudden, violent surge, he began to bounce the massive machine up and down, his actions frantic and uncontrolled. The ground shook with each jarring impact.

“No, Mark, that’s not how you—!” Anna started, but her words were lost in the cacophony.

Then, with a mighty heave, Mark slammed the pogodozer forward. The massive scoop connected with the Van of Pain, not with precision, but with brute force. The impact was tremendous, sending a tremor through the air. And then, miraculously, Serina was free. She tumbled to the ground, shaken but unharmed, her small body trembling.

Mark, his chest heaving, didn’t even glance at Serina. He just continued his frantic, up-and-down bouncing, a testament to his sheer, unadulterated selfishness. Anna, however, had seen enough. The relief of Serina’s safety was quickly replaced by a burning frustration. Mark’s actions, his refusal to share, his near-fatal recklessness that had somehow, by chance, saved Serina, was too much.

As her eyes scanned the area, seeking another way to intervene, they landed on something else. Tucked away near General Stokes’ discarded escape route was a gleaming, metallic object. A jetpack. Anna’s mind, ever the strategist, latched onto it. If Mark wouldn’t help, she would find another way.

“I’m going to get that jetpack,” she declared, her voice firm with resolve.

But before she could even take a step, Mark, still high in the pogodozer’s cockpit, saw her intention. “No!” he roared, his possessiveness extending even to this new discovery. He slammed the pogodozer into reverse, charging towards Anna with alarming speed.

“Mark, what are you doing?!” Anna cried, scrambling to get out of his path.

He didn’t slow down. In his haste to stop her, to keep everything for himself, he misjudged the distance, his movements clumsy and desperate. He reached out, grabbing for Anna, but his grip slipped. In his rush, Anna stumbled, and the jetpack, which had been lying on the ground, was bumped. It whizzed through the air, landing squarely on Mark’s back.

There was a moment of stunned silence. Mark, his eyes wide with panic, looked down. The jetpack was on him, alright, but it was on backwards. The sleek, futuristic device was strapped to him in a way that was clearly not intended. Before he could even process what was happening, the sensors, designed to react to the user’s movements, detected the misplaced orientation and the jolt from Mark’s earlier frantic actions.

With a sudden, powerful surge of energy, the jetpack ignited. A blast of fiery exhaust erupted from the nozzles, not downwards, but upwards. The straps, meant to secure a pilot, cinched tighter, pulling Mark’s arms and legs. He was yanked from the pogodozer’s cockpit with a yelp of pure terror.

“Whoa! What the—?!” Mark shrieked, his voice laced with a panic that Anna had rarely heard.

He was airborne, soaring uncontrollably into the vast blue sky. Below, Anna and Serina watched in stunned silence, the pogodozer idling uselessly. Mark, their secretive, selfish brother, was a tiny, flailing figure being carried away by a rogue jetpack, his cries of terror echoing back to them. And then, amidst the panicked cries, came another, more mortifying sound, a soft, unmistakable splat. Mark was not only flying uncontrollably, but he was also pooping his pants.

Anna’s initial shock quickly gave way to a surge of adrenaline. Mark was in trouble, real trouble, and despite his infuriating selfishness, he was still their brother. She glanced at the pogodozer, then at the rapidly shrinking speck of Mark in the sky. A plan, audacious and risky, began to form in her mind.

“Serina, stay here, keep an eye on things,” Anna instructed, her voice steady despite the chaos. She scrambled back into the pogodozer’s cockpit. This time, her movements were deliberate, focused. She knew Mark’s tendency to overreact, to panic. She also knew the immense power of this machine.

She engaged the controls, the massive engine rumbling to life. With a surge of power, she guided the pogodozer towards the spot where Mark had been lifted. She needed to get close, to force him to disengage the jetpack. The challenge was immense; Mark was still bouncing erratically, a chaotic projectile against the sky.

“Mark! Hold on!” she yelled, her voice amplified by the machine’s speakers. She carefully maneuvered the pogodozer, its massive scoop raising towards the sky. She had to be precise. One wrong move, and she could make things worse.

As she got closer, she saw Mark struggling, his face a mask of pure terror and humiliation. He was still upside down, the jetpack blasting away, carrying him further from safety. Anna took a deep breath. She nudged the pogodozer’s controls, causing the machine to bounce, mimicking Mark’s earlier frantic movements, but with a controlled intent.

The jolt from the pogodozer’s bouncing was enough. The now-loosened straps on Mark’s back, combined with the sudden impact, caused the jetpack’s mechanism to falter. The upward blast sputtered, then died. Mark, no longer propelled by the rogue device, began to fall.

“Whoa!” he screamed, his voice a mixture of relief and renewed terror.

Anna reacted instantly. She angled the pogodozer’s scoop, positioning it directly beneath him. Mark plummeted, landing with a surprisingly soft thud in the massive metal basin. He was safe, for now, but his humiliation was palpable. He lay there, a tangled mess of limbs and soiled undergarments, his eyes wide and tearful.

Anna lowered the scoop, her heart pounding with relief. She had saved him. Now, for the difficult part. She looked at Mark, still sprawled in the scoop, and then at the pogodozer. A wave of anger, a culmination of Mark’s secrecy and selfishness, washed over her.

“You know what, Mark?” she said, her voice tight with emotion. “You wanted to keep this all to yourself? Fine. You have it.” She pushed him out of the scoop, his descent less graceful this time, landing him on the ground with a grunt. “Try it yourself. See how far your ‘pro’ skills get you.”

She then pushed him towards the pogodozer’s controls. “Go on. Drive it. Explore. Have your selfish adventure.”

Mark, still dazed and mortified, scrambled into the cockpit. He looked at the controls, then at Anna, a flicker of understanding, or perhaps just confusion, in his eyes. He engaged the engine again, and with a tentative hand, began to operate the pogodozer. He pushed it forward, a little shaky at first, then with more confidence. He was trying to prove himself, to show Anna that he could do this, that he didn’t need anyone.

But the pogodozer, still partially damaged from its encounter with the Van of Pain, and perhaps sensing Mark’s uncontrolled, desperate energy, began to behave erratically. It sputtered, it coughed, and then, with a deafening explosion, it blew up. Flames erupted from the chassis, sending shrapnel flying in all directions.

Mark, thrown clear of the blast, landed on the ground, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated despair. The pogodozer, his prized possession, his symbol of control, was gone. He looked at the smoldering wreckage, then at Anna, and the dam of his suppressed emotions finally broke. He burst into tears, a loud, wrenching wail that echoed across the landscape. He threw himself onto the ground, kicking and screaming, his tantrum a tempest of childish fury that lasted for four agonizing hours.

Anna watched him, a mixture of pity and exasperation swirling within her. Serina, ever the peacemaker, sat beside her brother, offering quiet comfort. The silence, broken only by Mark’s sobs, was heavy with unspoken emotions.

Just as the last vestiges of Mark’s tantrum began to fade, a familiar, grating voice cut through the air. “Well, well, well. What have we here?”

General Stokes. He stood there, a smug smirk plastered across his face, a smugness that always promised trouble. And beside him, looking remarkably unharmed, was Serina. Anna’s heart leaped into her throat.

“Serina!” Anna cried, rushing towards her.

“I’m okay, Anna,” Serina whispered, clinging to her sister.

General Stokes chuckled, a sound like gravel grinding. “A rather… explosive gift, wouldn’t you say? I do enjoy a good fireworks display. But it seems my generosity has been… misused.” He gestured towards the wreckage of the pogodozer. “Such a shame. It could have been so useful.”

He then turned his attention to the smoldering pile of metal, and then to the jetpack, which lay nearby, its purpose now obvious. “However,” he continued, his eyes glinting, “I see you still have this little contraption.” He pointed at the jetpack. “A far more interesting piece of technology, if I do say so myself.”

He walked towards Anna, his hand outstretched. “Give me the jetpack, and I’ll… consider sparing your sister. She’s proven to be quite a resilient little thing, hasn’t she?” His gaze flickered to Serina, a predatory gleam in his eyes.

Anna’s mind raced. She looked at Serina, her innocent face etched with fear, then at the smirking face of General Stokes. She knew his promises were as hollow as his threats were real. But she also knew she couldn’t let him harm Serina.

“No,” Anna said, her voice trembling but firm. “You’re not getting it.”

General Stokes’ smirk faltered. “Are you sure about that? Because if not, I might have to… persuade you.” He took a step closer, his hand reaching for the jetpack.

But Anna had a different plan. She saw a flicker of something in General Stokes’ eyes – a certain arrogance, a belief in his own invincibility. She glanced at Serina, who nodded, a silent understanding passing between them.

“Fine,” Anna said, her voice laced with a forced resignation. “You can have it.” She picked up the jetpack, its weight surprisingly light in her hands. She approached General Stokes, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

As she handed him the jetpack, she made sure to hold it at a specific angle, a subtle gesture that General Stokes, in his haste and arrogance, overlooked. He snatched it from her, his eyes already imagining its power.

“Excellent,” he purred, turning to strap it onto his own back. “Now, let’s see this little marvel in action.”

But as he fumbled with the straps, trying to secure it, he didn’t realize Anna had deliberately placed it on him backwards, just like she had Mark. The sensors, already primed, detected the improper fit. Before General Stokes could even protest, the jetpack roared to life.

With a powerful upward thrust, General Stokes was propelled into the sky, a shriek of utter disbelief and terror erupting from his throat. He flailed wildly, a purple blur against the blue canvas, his promises of revenge echoing back to them.

“This isn’t over!” he screamed, his voice fading into the distance. “I’ll be back! You’ll pay for this!”

Anna and Serina watched him go, a shared look of relief and triumph passing between them. Mark, still sprawled on the ground, looked up, his tear-streaked face a picture of bewildered astonishment.

As General Stokes disappeared over the horizon, Anna turned to her siblings. The pogodozer was destroyed, their brother had had a very public and embarrassing meltdown, and their enemy was flying away, promising revenge. It was, by all accounts, a chaotic, messy, and utterly unpredictable day. But for the first time in a long time, Anna felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps, just perhaps, even in the midst of such pandemonium, they could find a way to navigate the storm, together.
