The prototype, a hulking, ungainly contraption of pipes, turbines, and repurposed industrial vats, sat on a nearby barge, a testament to their ambition and, increasingly, their struggles. It’s like the ocean itself is fighting us.”

Anya closed her eyes for a brief moment, a flicker of the old fear, the one that had haunted her since her ill-fated research project in the Amazon, threatening to resurface. That project, intended to develop biodegradable alternatives to plastics, had been a spectacular failure, a costly lesson in the unforgiving nature of ecological intervention. Maria nodded, already pulling out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. “I’ll call Javier. He owes me a favor. He’ll get his crew out there.” Her practicality was a steady anchor in Anya’s often turbulent sea of ideas.

The next few days were a blur of frantic activity and mounting frustration. The funding applications continued to pile up, each rejection a fresh sting. He surveyed the scene, his gaze lingering on the elaborate network of pipes and the faint sheen of oil on the water’s surface near the processing unit. “I was in the area,” he said, his voice calm, measured. “Curiosity, you might say. I’ve been following your work, Ms. Sharma, with a mixture of fascination and… professional concern.”

Anya braced herself. “Professional concern?”

“Your energy conversion efficiency, for one,” he continued, his eyes scanning the various gauges and readouts on the prototype. “The Sterling engine is notoriously sensitive to temperature differentials. Harnessing deep-sea geothermal heat, even with the ocean’s insulating properties, presents significant thermodynamic challenges. And then there’s the plastic itself. Depolymerization isn’t a simple process. The energy input required, the purity of the output… are you certain you’ve accounted for all the variables?”

His questions were polite, almost gentle, but they hit their mark. They were the same questions that had been gnawing at Anya, the same doubts that the funding committees had seized upon.

“We’re working on it, Dr. Thorne,” Anya replied, her voice regaining some of its strength. “The geothermal heat is more consistent than we initially predicted, and the Sterling engine is proving more robust. As for the plastic, yes, it’s complex. But we’ve developed a catalyst that significantly lowers the energy threshold for depolymerization. And the output… well, that’s what we’re aiming to prove.”

Dr. Thorne nodded slowly, his gaze fixed on a particular section of the barge where a small, dark stain marred the otherwise grey surface. “I see,” he said. “A spill?”

Anya’s cheeks flushed. “A minor leak from the processing unit. We’re… troubleshooting.”

He didn’t offer sympathy, just a quiet observation. “The chemistry of these polymers is intricate, Ms. Sharma. The byproducts can be… unpredictable.” He paused, then turned to face her directly. “I received your latest proposal. The projections for scalability are ambitious. Perhaps overly so. We were so close.” He looked back at Anya, a flicker of something akin to understanding in his eyes. “The world isn’t always kind to bold ideas, Ms. Sharma. He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “You have a catalyst, you say? For depolymerization?”

Anya nodded, a spark of hope igniting within her. “Yes. Based on a novel enzyme modification.”

Dr. Thorne raised an eyebrow, a genuine spark of scientific curiosity now evident. “Enzyme modification… interesting. I’d be curious to see the data. The kinetics. The energy yield curves.” He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, sleek business card. “My private research lab. If you ever find yourself… stuck. He turned and walked away, disappearing into the gathering gloom, leaving Anya standing on the deck, the business card clutched in her hand. The wind still whipped around her, but now it carried a different scent – the faintest hint of possibility. The skepticism hadn’t vanished, the challenges remained immense, but for the first time in weeks, Anya felt a flicker of warmth spread through her.
