Chapter 1

Stranded Together

A sudden, violent plane crash leaves the sole survivors, a charming architect and a fiercely independent writer, stranded in a remote, uncharted wilderness. Their initial fear and desperation quickly give way to a grudging reliance on each other for survival.

The world had been a symphony of jet engine hum and the low murmur of hushed conversations, a predictable rhythm that lulled most into a state of serene indifference. Elara, however, had been wrestling with a stubborn sentence, the kind that refused to bend to her will, when the symphony shattered. It began with a shudder, a violent tremor that rattled the overhead bins and sent a collective gasp through the cabin. Then came the roar, a guttural, tearing sound that stole the air from her lungs. The plane lurched, a drunken beast throwing itself against an unseen wall. Elara’s knuckles went white as she gripped the armrests, her carefully constructed prose dissolving into pure, unadulterated terror.

Across the aisle, Liam felt it too. The architect, usually so composed, his mind filled with blueprints and structural integrity, was suddenly confronted with the terrifying fragility of it all. He’d been sketching, a new skyscraper taking shape on his notepad, when the world tilted. His stomach lurched, and the last coherent thought he registered was the startled cry of the flight attendant. Then, darkness, a violent cacophony, and the sickening sensation of falling.

When consciousness returned, it was to the insistent drip of water and the acrid smell of smoke. Elara coughed, a raw, tearing sound in her throat. Her head throbbed, a dull, persistent ache. She blinked, her eyes struggling to focus. Twisted metal, shattered glass, and the eerie silence that followed a storm. She was on her side, pinned by something heavy. Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at her.

“Hello?” she croaked, her voice raspy. “Is anyone there?”

A groan answered her, closer than she expected. She strained to see, her vision clearing in patches. A man, his face smudged with dirt and a thin trickle of blood near his temple, was struggling to free himself from a collapsed section of the fuselage. He looked dazed, but his eyes, when they met hers, held a flicker of immediate concern.

“Are you… are you alright?” he asked, his voice rough.

“I think so,” Elara managed, a fresh wave of coughing seizing her. “I’m stuck.”

He grunted, pushing against the debris pinning her. “Don’t worry. We’ll get you out.”

It took a combined effort, fueled by adrenaline and a desperate will to live, but eventually, she was free. They stumbled out of the mangled wreck, the cool, damp air a stark contrast to the suffocating heat of the cabin. The forest loomed around them, a wall of impenetrable green, silent and indifferent. The plane, or what was left of it, lay scattered like broken toys. There was no sign of anyone else. Just them.

“Where are we?” Elara whispered, her gaze sweeping across the dense canopy.

The man shook his head, his expression grim. “No idea. This doesn’t look like anywhere on the flight path.” He extended a hand, his palm rough and calloused. “I’m Liam.”

Elara took it, her grip surprisingly firm. “Elara.”

They stood there for a moment, two strangers bound by a shared trauma, the vast, untamed wilderness stretching out before them. Fear was a tangible thing, a cold knot in Elara’s stomach, but beneath it, a nascent sense of something else was stirring. A grudging reliance, perhaps. A fragile understanding that survival, in this godforsaken place, would depend on each other. The symphony of the plane had ended, replaced by the unsettling quiet of the wild, and their story, their improbable romance, had just begun.
