The rain had started the moment I'd pulled into Marcus’s driveway, a sudden, dramatic downpour that mirrored the tempest brewing inside me. Chloe had been insistent, of course. “Just go, Leo,” she’d said, her voice warm but firm as she’d handed me the spare key. “He’s worried. And frankly, you’ve been a ghost lately. This is good for you.” Good for me. Easy for her to say. She didn’t have Marcus Thorne’s intense gaze fixed on her, didn’t feel the earth tilt on its axis every time he smiled. And she certainly didn’t have a secret like mine, a secret that felt heavier than any storm cloud.
Marcus opened the door before I even knocked, as if he’d willed me there. He was leaning against the frame, a soft smile playing on his lips, the kind that always made my breath catch. The warm glow of his living room spilled out, chasing away some of the damp chill that had settled into my bones. “Thought you might need a lift,” he said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through me. He gestured inside, his eyes, those deep pools of hazel, searching mine. “Come in. You’re soaked.”
I stepped inside, the scent of his home—woodsmoke and something subtly spicy, like sandalwood—enveloping me. It was a comforting smell, a smell that had become synonymous with a different kind of comfort, a comfort I’d been craving more and more. Marcus shed my damp jacket with a practiced ease, his fingers brushing mine as he did, sending a familiar jolt through me. I tried to keep my expression neutral, to hide the sudden flush that I was sure was creeping up my neck.
