Eleanor Vance was a fixture at the Pink Palace, as much a part of its gilded tapestry as the velvet ropes and the hushed laughter that echoed through its halls at night. Her presence was a constant, a silhouette against the opulent backdrop, her silver hair meticulously coiffed, her eyes, the colour of faded sapphires, missing nothing. Detective Isabella Rossi found her perched at her usual table in the dimly lit lounge, a crystal glass of something amber held delicately between her long, bejeweled fingers. The air around Eleanor seemed to shimmer with an almost tangible aura of curated indifference, a practiced mask that Isabella suspected hid a sharper, more discerning intelligence.

“Detective Rossi,” Eleanor greeted, her voice a low, melodious purr that barely disturbed the ambient murmur. She didn’t rise, merely inclined her head, a subtle acknowledgment that Isabella had arrived. “I trust you are finding your investigation… stimulating.”

Isabella slid into the chair opposite Eleanor, the plush upholstery a stark contrast to the hard-won truths she was seeking. “Stimulating is one word for it, Mrs. Vance. Confusing is another.” She met Eleanor’s gaze, a silent challenge. “I understand you were at the Pink Palace the night Mr. Sterling died.”
