The air in Detective Isabella Rossi’s cramped office was thick with the scent of stale coffee and the metallic tang of unanswered questions. The case files on her desk, a chaotic monument to the Pink Palace Murders, seemed to mock her with their incompleteness. Each brutal death, meticulously documented, only deepened the enigma, painting a picture of a killer both audacious and precise. Her gaze, usually sharp and analytical, held a hint of weariness as she turned a photograph over in her gloved hand. Mr. Sterling. His lifeless eyes stared back, a silent accusation.

Beside the photograph lay a small, velvet pouch, its drawstring pulled tight. It had been found tucked away in Sterling’s private safe, a place Isabella had almost overlooked amidst the opulent clutter of his penthouse. The contents, initially dismissed as mere trinkets, were now gnawing at her. A single, tarnished silver locket, intricately engraved with a pattern she couldn’t quite place. And beneath it, a folded, brittle piece of parchment.

She carefully unfolded the parchment, her breath catching. It wasn't a letter, nor a ledger. It was a map, or rather, a diagram. Lines crisscrossed, connecting symbols that meant nothing to her. Dates, some faded, others starkly recent, were scrawled in elegant, looping script. And at the center of it all, a single, bold X.
