The air grew thick, not with the scent of old wood or dust, but with something akin to the hushed, prickly feeling after a storm. Lily found herself in a part of the staircase where the vibrant colors of the walls had softened, swirling into a hazy, grey mist. It clung to her, damp and cool, and within it, whispers began to form. Not the gentle echoes of laughter or the soft sighs of forgotten lullabies, but sharp, jagged sounds, like tiny shards of glass.

"You never listen!" a voice snapped, close enough to make Lily flinch. It wasn't a voice she recognized, yet it felt strangely familiar, like a tune she’d heard a long time ago and couldn't quite place. Another voice, lower and laced with frustration, retorted, "That's not fair! I *always* listen!"

The mist swirled, and with it, words detached themselves from the haze, floating like lost balloons. "Selfish!" drifted past Lily’s ear, followed by "Always your fault!" and then, a heavy, dark phrase: "I wish you hadn't..." Lily’s breath hitched. These weren't just random sounds; they were the jumbled pieces of arguments, the sharp edges of disagreements that had been left unsaid, or perhaps, said too loudly.
