Chapter 4
Echoes of Laughter
Lily encounters playful, wispy creatures formed from forgotten toys and echoes of childhood laughter. They flit around her, remnants of joyful, yet distant, memories.
The kaleidoscope of colors on the stairwell walls had begun to shimmer with a gentler, warmer hue. Gone were the sharp, angular bursts of crimson and electric blue from the lower levels. Now, soft yellows bloomed like dandelions, and gentle oranges swirled like melted sorbet. Lily found herself humming a tune she didn’t quite recognize, a melody that felt like sunshine on her skin. As she rounded a bend, the air grew thick with a delightful scent, a mix of old paper, dusty velvet, and something sweet, like forgotten birthday cake.
And then she saw them. Little wisps of light, no bigger than her thumb, danced just beyond the reach of her fingertips. They zipped and twirled, leaving trails of sparkling dust that dissolved as quickly as they appeared. Some were shaped like tiny, fuzzy teddy bears, their button eyes gleaming. Others resembled miniature wooden soldiers, their painted smiles a little chipped, their arms held at jaunty angles. One, a delicate spun-sugar butterfly, fluttered past her nose, its wings shimmering with iridescence.
A chorus of giggles, light as dandelion fluff, echoed around her. It wasn't a single voice, but a symphony of hushed, delighted sounds, like secrets shared on a summer afternoon. The creatures, too, began to coalesce. They weren’t solid, not like the grumpy gnome from the lower stairs, but more like puffs of smoke given form. A little rocking horse, its paint worn smooth from countless hours of play, trotted past, its painted eyes wide with amusement. A bright red ball, seemingly made of solidified laughter, bounced merrily beside Lily, nudging her hand playfully.
