The staircase seems to brighten, the colors becoming warmer and more inviting. The oppressive atmosphere lifts, replaced by a sense of hopeful anticipation.

The air in the staircase shifted, no longer thick with the chill of forgotten things, but warm, like a sunbeam on a drowsy afternoon. Lily noticed it first in the swirling colors that painted the walls. The deep blues and purples of yesterday’s anxieties had softened, bleeding into gentle oranges and rosy pinks. It was as if the very stones of the staircase had exhaled a sigh of relief, and with that sigh, the oppressive weight Lily had felt clinging to her began to lift.

She took a step, then another, her heart beating with a lighter rhythm. The echoing silence of the deeper levels was replaced by a faint, joyful hum, like a distant melody played on a happy instrument. It wasn’t the boisterous music of her present, but a sweeter, more tender tune, hinting at pleasures long tucked away.

Ahead, the winding path seemed to curve towards a soft, golden light. It wasn’t the harsh glare of day, but a welcoming glow, promising warmth and comfort. The creatures she’d encountered earlier, the ones made of mismatched buttons and faded ribbons, seemed to be moving with a new lightness too. A little knitted rabbit, its yarn unraveling slightly at the ear, hopped along beside her for a moment, its button eyes twinkling with a newfound cheer. A small, plush dinosaur, missing a leg but still jaunty, gave a happy little waddle. They were still fragments, still echoes, but now they felt less like burdens and more like fond companions on her journey.
