Lily stood before the mirror, the polished surface reflecting a girl she barely recognized, her eyes wide with a mixture of apprehension and dawning comprehension. The air in the room, once thick with the spectral chill of the memory, now felt lighter, cleaner, as if a long-held breath had finally been released. She saw not just her own face, but the faint, shimmering outline of a smaller girl, huddled and alone, her small hands clutching a worn, one-eyed teddy bear. This was the memory, the one that had always felt like a dark knot in her stomach, a whisper of fear she’d tried so hard to ignore.

"You were so scared," Lily whispered, her voice a soft murmur in the quiet room. She reached out, her fingers hovering just inches from the glass, as if she could somehow touch the little girl trapped within. "And so sad. It must have been so lonely." The words tumbled out, a cascade of empathy she hadn’t known she possessed. The spectral chill, which had clung to her like cobwebs moments before, began to recede, replaced by a warmth that spread from her chest outwards. It wasn't the bright, sunny warmth of the room at the top of the staircase, but a gentler, more profound warmth, like the comfort of a well-loved blanket.

As she spoke, the image in the mirror shifted. The spectral outline of the little girl became clearer, her tear-streaked face turning towards Lily’s reflection. There was no longer fear in her eyes, but a quiet plea. Lily understood. The loneliness hadn't been just about being alone in that moment, but about feeling unseen, unheard, her fear dismissed or misunderstood. She remembered now, the hushed voices, the quick pats on the head, the feeling of being a bother for being upset.
