Chapter 16
Confronting the Spooky Memory
With the owl's steady presence, Lily confronts the source of her fear. It's a memory of being lost, a moment of intense vulnerability she'd buried.
The air grew heavy, thick with an unnameable scent, a mix of dust and something like forgotten cookies. Lily’s heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drumbeat of apprehension. The vibrant colors that had danced on the walls moments before now seemed to recede, leaving behind shadows that stretched and writhed like playful, yet menacing, inkblots. Lily swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. She knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the bone, what he meant. This was it. The memory she’d tried so hard to push away, to bury beneath layers of joyful discoveries and silly songs. It clung to the edges of her mind like a persistent cobweb, tickling her with a vague, unsettling dread.
