The air grew thicker with each step, not with dust or cobwebs, but with a strange, shimmering haze that pulsed with faint, forgotten colours. Lily’s heart thumped a little faster, a drumbeat against the quiet hum of the staircase. She had passed through the Garden of Lost Dreams, a place where wilted hopes and faded wishes clung to the air like dew, and now, something else was stirring. The walls, which had previously shimmered with the joyous hues of her childhood toys and the bright laughter of friends, now began to deepen, swirling with shades of twilight and bruised plum. It felt like the edge of a storm, not a frightening one, but one that held a certain gravity, a promise of things profound and perhaps a little sad.

A rustling sound, like dry leaves skittering across a pavement, drew her attention to the side. From the deepening shadows, a figure began to coalesce. It wasn't solid, not like the giggling dust bunnies or the shy, button-eyed bears she’d met before. This creature was made of wisps and shadows, woven from threads that seemed to catch the dim light and twist it into something melancholic. It was a creature of regret, and it was trying to block her path.

It flowed towards her, not with footsteps, but with a silent, gliding motion, like smoke unspooling. Its form was indistinct, shifting and swirling, but Lily could sense a shape, a vaguely human outline, with long, trailing tendrils that seemed to snag at the very air. The colours that made up this creature were muted, shades of grey and a pale, almost transparent blue, like the colour of a sky just before the sun dips below the horizon.
