April, perched atop her usual clique like a queen on a slightly wobbly throne, had just delivered her latest, most venomous pronouncement.

“Honestly, Summer,” April drawled, her voice dripping with manufactured sympathy, “it’s just… sad. Watching you try so hard. Like that… *thing* you call an outfit today. And the way you talk to yourself? It’s like you’re auditioning for a one-woman show about loneliness.”

A ripple of nervous giggles spread through the onlookers. Summer, standing a few feet away, felt the familiar heat creep up her neck, the urge to shrink, to disappear, to become one with the linoleum floor. Her sketchbook, clutched tightly in her hand, felt like both a shield and a target. Alex, bless his chaotic, lion-hearted soul, was supposed to be here. He’d promised to “personally escort” April to the nearest black hole if she so much as *looked* at Summer the wrong way. But Alex, Summer knew, operated on a slightly different temporal plane than the rest of humanity, especially when it involved punctuality.
