The fluorescent lights of Northwood High hummed with the usual Friday afternoon apathy, a stark contrast to the internal tempest brewing within Summer. A crumpled flyer, its edges softened by nervous fidgeting, lay on her desk: "Annual Northwood Talent Show – Sign-ups Open Now!" For most, it was an opportunity for glory, a chance to showcase hidden talents. For Summer, it was April's personal Olympic Games for petty torture.

She could already picture it. April, perched on her social Everest, a queen surveying her conquered kingdom, would orchestrate Summer’s public demise with the precision of a seasoned puppeteer. A botched song, a fumbled dance, a spectacularly embarrassing poem – April had an endless arsenal of humiliating scenarios. Summer’s stomach did a nervous flip-flop, a familiar sensation that had become as ingrained as her habit of doodling intricate, fantastical creatures in the margins of her textbooks.

"Don't even think about it, Summer," a voice boomed, startling her so badly she nearly sent her entire pencil case skittering across the linoleum. Alex, a whirlwind of vibrant energy and slightly-too-loud enthusiasm, stood beside her desk, his grin wide enough to split his face. He had a way of appearing like a brightly colored meteor, all sudden impact and dazzling light.
