The air in the art room hung thick with the scent of turpentine and impending doom. Summer stared at the mangled remains of her project, a sigh escaping her lips that felt as fragile as a butterfly's wing. April’s handiwork was, as always, meticulously cruel. The clay sculpture, once a proud, if slightly lopsided, representation of a blossoming sunflower, was now a heap of cracked, muddy shards. Her painstakingly painted canvases, depicting a whimsical forest scene, were slashed with what looked suspiciously like a dull butter knife, the vibrant greens and blues now weeping streaks of color down the primed surface. It was a masterpiece of malice, a testament to April’s unwavering dedication to Summer’s misery.

“Oh, for the love of all that is glittery and good,” a voice boomed, shattering the mournful silence. Summer’s head snapped up. Alex stood framed in the doorway, his usual whirlwind of energy momentarily paused. His eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, were narrowed as he took in the devastation. He strode into the room, his boots clomping on the linoleum, a stark contrast to the hushed reverence usually afforded to the art department.
