The air in the visiting room hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation, a familiar perfume Elias Thorne had worn for nearly a decade. Ten years. The number itself felt like a physical weight, pressing down on his chest, stealing his breath. Outside, the world had spun on, seasons cycling through their vibrant, indifferent dance. Inside, time had congealed, each day a grey, indistinguishable replica of the last. But today was different. Today, the calendar pages, once a cruel testament to his incarceration, now whispered of freedom. Elias was due to be released in a matter of weeks.

He watched Sarah through the reinforced glass, her image slightly distorted, a mirage he’d clung to through countless sleepless nights. She looked older, of course. The laughter lines around her eyes seemed deeper, etched by worry as much as by joy. Yet, her gaze, when it met his, still held that fierce, unwavering light he’d fallen in love with. It was a light that had kept him alive, a beacon in the suffocating darkness of his confinement. Beside her, a young woman, barely a teenager, sat perched on the edge of her seat, her curiosity a palpable energy. Lily. His Lily. The daughter he’d only known as an infant, a wailing bundle swaddled in his wife’s arms. Now, she was a stranger, a ghost from a life he barely remembered.

“Dad?” The word, spoken with a hesitant tremor, was a fragile offering.
