The fluorescent lights of the prison library hummed with a monotonous drone, a counterpoint to the gnawing silence that had become Elias Thorne’s constant companion. Ten years. Ten years since he’d walked into the precinct, a man brimming with civic duty, and emerged a pariah, a convicted felon. The weight of that betrayal, the sheer, sickening absurdity of it all, still pressed down on him, heavy as the grey concrete walls that enclosed him. He traced the faded spine of a law book, the words blurring into meaningless shapes. What was justice, anyway? A cruel joke? A meticulously crafted illusion?

He’d tried to hold onto the memory of Sarah’s face, her eyes wide with a terror he couldn’t soothe, and the impossibly small, perfect hands of their daughter, Lily. He pictured them now, Sarah navigating the treacherous waters of single motherhood, shielding Lily from the whispers, the sideways glances, the indelible stain of her father’s supposed crime. His pure intention, the simple act of reporting what he’d seen, had fractured their lives into a thousand jagged pieces.

A shuffle of worn slippers broke his reverie. Brother Michael, a lifer with eyes that had seen too much and a heart that had hardened into granite, approached his table. He slid a folded, dog-eared newspaper across the worn surface. “Saw this. Thought of you.”
