The world Lily knew was painted in muted tones. Her mother’s smile, though genuine, often held a veil of weariness. The house, once filled with Elias’s booming laughter, now echoed with the quiet hum of Sarah’s tireless efforts. Lily, at ten years old, understood that her father was “away,” a word that felt as vast and empty as the sky on a cloudy day. She didn’t understand the hushed conversations, the averted glances when certain topics arose, or the way her mother’s hand would tighten around hers when they passed the imposing stone building on the edge of town.
One crisp autumn afternoon, Sarah found Lily meticulously arranging a collection of smooth, grey stones on the worn rug in the living room. Each stone had a tiny, almost imperceptible mark scratched onto its surface.
“What are you doing, sweetheart?” Sarah asked, her voice soft, trying to keep the tremor of anxiety from her tone. She was always on edge, a constant state of vigilance that had become as natural as breathing.
