The stale air of the diner clung to Sarah like a second skin, thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. Outside, the city lights bled into the bruised twilight, each flicker a reminder of the life she was fighting to reclaim. She stirred her lukewarm tea, the spoon clinking a hollow rhythm against the ceramic. It had been a month since the anonymous tip, a fragile thread of hope that had pulled her out of the suffocating despair of the past decade. A month of hushed phone calls, clandestine meetings, and a gnawing fear that clung to her like the diner's lingering aroma.
Then, the bell above the door chimed, a jarring sound that made her heart leap into her throat. She didn’t need to look up to know who it was. The shadow that fell across her table was too familiar, too charged with a history she’d tried to bury deep.
“Sarah,” Mike’s voice was a low rumble, laced with an insinuation she’d grown to detest. He slid into the booth opposite her, his gaze sweeping over her with an unnerving intensity. He hadn’t aged well. The sharp angles of his face were now softened by a perpetual cynicism, and the spark that had once drawn her in had been replaced by a cold, calculating glint.
