Chapter 10
The Detective's Game
Detective Harding, implicated in the original cover-up, senses the resurfacing truth. He becomes a more active obstacle, determined to keep the past buried and his reputation intact.
Detective Harding felt the familiar prickle of unease crawl up his spine, a sensation he’d learned to either ignore or crush with practiced efficiency. It was the kind of feeling that came with loose ends, with whispers that refused to die. He’d thought Elias Thorne was a closed case, a neat little package tied up with a bow of injustice. Ten years. Ten years of silence, of Elias rotting in a cell while the world outside spun on, oblivious. But lately, the silence had begun to crack.
It started with a stray comment from a rookie officer, a casual remark about an old case file that had been dredged up for archival review. A name, Thorne’s name, had been mentioned in passing, a footnote in a forgotten ledger. Harding had dismissed it then, but the seed of disquiet had been sown. Now, it was sprouting, its tendrils reaching into the carefully cultivated garden of his present.
He sat in his office, the late afternoon sun slanting through the blinds, casting striped shadows across his desk. The room was a testament to his career: commendations hung on the walls, photographs of him with dignitaries and smiling citizens lined the shelves. Harding was a man who understood the optics of justice, the performance of integrity. He’d built his reputation on swift resolutions, on cases that were clean, decisive. Elias Thorne had been one of those cases. Too clean, perhaps.
