The air thickened with an unsettling stillness as Angelo’s boots finally crunched on familiar soil. The emerald canopy that had been his constant companion for weeks now gave way to the rolling hills and scattered homesteads of his homeland. Yet, the usual warmth of homecoming was conspicuously absent, replaced by a prickling unease that settled deep in his gut. Smoke, not the comforting plume of hearth fires, but dark, acrid tendrils, coiled against the pale afternoon sky in the distance. A knot of dread tightened in his chest. He quickened his pace, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

As he neared the village, the silence became deafening. No children’s laughter, no chatter of villagers at market, only the mournful creak of a weather vane and the distant, unsettling cry of a hawk. The few figures he saw were huddled, their faces etched with a fear that mirrored his own growing apprehension. He spotted Elara, the baker’s wife, her usually rosy cheeks ashen, tending to a wilting patch of herbs.

“Elara!” he called out, his voice rough with disuse and worry.
