I get my first direct sense of the antagonist, Silas Blackwood. His reputation precedes him—a man of influence and ruthlessness. I realize I'm up against more than just a treasure hunt.

The air in the dimly lit bar clung to me like cheap cologne, a thick, cloying miasma of stale beer and desperation. It wasn't my usual haunt, not by a long shot. I preferred places where the music was loud enough to drown out my own thoughts, or the company was lively enough to make me forget I was alone. This place, however, had a certain… gravitas. The kind of place where hushed conversations carried the weight of secrets and the clinking of glasses sounded like distant warnings. I nursed a lukewarm whiskey, the amber liquid doing little to warm the knot of unease that had been tightening in my gut since I’d left Dr. Reed’s dusty office.

Dr. Reed. Even her name felt like it belonged in a hushed library, not whispered in a place like this. She’d been a whirlwind of nervous energy and suppressed panic, her pronouncements about Silas Blackwood delivered with a tremor that belied her otherwise composed demeanor. “He’s… he’s not someone you want to cross, Alex,” she’d said, her eyes darting around as if expecting him to materialize from the shadows. “He’s built an empire on… acquisitions. And not the legal kind.”

Acquisitions. That was a polite word for it. The stolen artifacts. The conspiracy. The very things that had transformed my little treasure hunt into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. And Silas Blackwood was the cat. Or perhaps, the spider. The man whose name was spoken with a mixture of fear and grudging respect in circles that thrived on the illicit.
