The faded ink on the parchment seemed to writhe under the lamplight, no longer just a trail of breadcrumbs leading to some forgotten hoard. Chapter 4 had ended with me hunched over my desk, the thrill of the chase a tangible thing buzzing beneath my skin. But now, as I pieced together the fragmented phrases, the buzzing morphed into a low thrum of unease. This wasn’t about gold doubloons or jewel-encrusted chalices. This was about something far more significant, something… stolen.
“Lost to the sands of time, only to be reclaimed by the keenest eye,” I murmured, tracing the elegant, looping script. The ‘keenest eye’ had certainly been mine, hadn’t it? Or perhaps the note-writer’s. The next line, however, sent a shiver down my spine. “Where empires crumble, their essence remains, guarded by the silent guardians.” Empires crumbling? That sounded less like a pirate’s booty and more like… history. Stolen history.
My mind raced, replaying the cryptic exchange with the archivist, Dr. Reed. She’d been so evasive about certain sections of the museum’s collection, her eyes darting nervously. I’d dismissed it as academic fussiness, but now… now her caution felt like a warning. What if the ‘treasure’ wasn't a thing to be found, but a truth to be unearthed?
