The weight of the ancient chest was a solid, reassuring presence against my shoulder as I navigated the familiar, yet now strangely altered, city streets. Sunlight, usually a welcome friend, felt too bright, too revealing, as if it could pierce through the carefully constructed facade of normalcy I was trying to inhabit. The adrenaline, that intoxicating rush that had propelled me through darkened warehouses and whispered exchanges, had begun to recede, leaving behind a hollow echo.

It was over. Silas Blackwood was no longer a phantom threat, but a disgraced figure, his carefully woven web of deceit exposed to the harsh light of day thanks to Evelyn’s meticulous evidence and my own, admittedly reckless, brand of improvisation. The artifacts, once destined for some shadowy private collection, were now safely cataloged, their provenance restored, their stories ready to be told to the world. A victory, a resounding one.

Yet, as I hailed a cab, the usual triumphant surge of satisfaction felt… muted. The driver, a burly man with tired eyes, glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his gaze lingering a moment too long on the faint smudge of dirt on my cheek and the slight disarray of my jacket. I offered a weak smile, a nervous tic I’d developed in recent weeks. He grunted and pulled away from the curb, the city’s symphony of honking horns and distant sirens a jarring contrast to the quiet hum of my own internal dissonance.
