My heart thrummed a wild rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of anticipation and a healthy dose of apprehension. Every step crunched on loose scree, the sound amplified in the confined space. Behind me, Evelyn’s breathing was steady, a calm counterpoint to my own ragged gasps. The Watcher, if they were even still present, had vanished like smoke, leaving us to navigate the final descent alone.

The passage opened abruptly, not into another cramped tunnel, but into a cavern. It wasn’t a natural formation, not entirely. The walls were smooth, carved with an unsettling precision, and the ceiling arched high above, lost in shadow. And then, the light. It wasn’t the harsh glare of my flashlight, but a soft, diffused glow that seemed to emanate from the very stone itself. It painted the chamber in hues of amber and gold, making the air shimmer.

I raised my flashlight, its beam cutting a stark white swathe through the ethereal luminescence. The treasure. It was real.
