The air in the forgotten crypt was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and ancient that tickled the back of my throat. Dust motes danced in the single beam of my flashlight, illuminating the rough-hewn walls and the skeletal remains of long-dead guardians. Beside me, Evelyn’s breath hitched, a tiny sound swallowed by the oppressive silence. We’d followed the map, deciphered the final riddle, and here we were, standing on the precipice of… well, we hoped, treasure.

“This is it, Alex,” Evelyn whispered, her voice tight with a mixture of awe and apprehension. She clutched her worn leather satchel as if it held the world’s last hope.

I grinned, the thrill of the chase coursing through me. “Told you that old parchment wasn’t just a grocery list.” I swept the flashlight beam across the chamber, searching for the obvious chest, the glittering hoard. But instead, my light caught on something else – a series of intricate carvings on the far wall, depicting scenes I didn’t recognize, figures with strange, elongated limbs and eyes that seemed to bore into me.
