The air in the crumbling warehouse was thick with the scent of dust and decay, a familiar perfume to me. Each creak of the floorboards, each scurrying shadow, was a note in a symphony of forgotten things. Dr. Reed, her face a mask of grim determination, moved with a quiet efficiency that belied the tension coiled within her. We’d navigated a labyrinth of booby traps and dead ends to get this far, and I could feel the oppressive weight of Silas Blackwood’s influence pressing in on us. He was a phantom, always a step behind, or perhaps, more chillingly, always a step ahead.
“The schematics indicated a secondary escape route here,” Dr. Reed whispered, her flashlight beam dancing across a section of wall that looked no different from any other. My heart hammered against my ribs. Every instinct screamed at me to just push, to break through, but Dr. Reed’s calm was a steadying force. She ran her fingers along the mortar, her brow furrowed in concentration. “There’s a slight irregularity.”
I leaned closer, my own adrenaline a buzzing current. “Irregularity? Like a loose brick? Or a secret lever?” I couldn’t help the hopeful lilt in my voice. The thought of another puzzle, another hidden mechanism, was a welcome distraction from the gnawing fear that Blackwood’s men could burst through the main entrance at any second.
