Anya found Elder Maeve tending to her small garden, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the neatly tilled soil. The air was thick with the sweet scent of honeysuckle, a stark contrast to the unease that had settled in Anya’s heart. She approached cautiously, her footsteps rustling on the gravel path. Maeve, her hands gnarled like ancient roots, looked up, her eyes, usually bright with knowing, held a flicker of something Anya couldn’t quite decipher – a weariness, perhaps, or a deep-seated sorrow.

“Elder Maeve,” Anya began, her voice softer than usual, “I… I need your wisdom. I’ve seen things, heard things, that don’t sit right.” She hesitated, choosing her words carefully. The whispers about the Pentagon were growing louder, more insistent, and Anya felt the weight of them pressing down on her. “There are… discrepancies. Resources meant for our town, for rebuilding, they seem to be… disappearing. And the information we’re given, it feels… curated. Not the whole story.”

Maeve straightened, her back a little stiff. She gestured for Anya to sit on a nearby wooden bench, its paint peeling like sun-dried skin. “Discrepancies, you say?” Her voice was a low rumble, like distant thunder. “The Pentagon, child, has always been a place of shadows. Even before the Great Conflict.” She paused, her gaze drifting towards the imposing structure that loomed on the horizon, a symbol of both protection and, increasingly, of something far more sinister. “The foundations of power are rarely built on honesty alone.”
