Anya Petrova stood by the window, the city lights below a muted shimmer against the velvet night. The weight of the past few days pressed down on her, a heavy cloak woven from suspicion and a creeping unease. The Great Conflict had left scars on every soul, and Anya, as a politician, had sworn to help heal them. But the whispers, the hushed conversations in the corridors of the Pentagon, the averted gazes of once-familiar colleagues – they spoke of a different kind of wound, one inflicted from within.

He’d also noticed Thorne’s increasingly secretive meetings, his hushed phone calls when he thought no one was listening.
