The air in Anya’s small office, usually filled with the comforting scent of old paper and brewing tea, now crackled with a different kind of energy. It was the hum of urgency, the quiet intensity of a mission unfolding. Elder Maeve sat across from Anya, her gnarled hands resting on a stack of brittle, yellowed documents. Beside Anya, Ben hunched over his laptop, his brow furrowed in concentration, the screen casting a cool blue glow on his face.
“These ledgers,” Maeve began, her voice a low murmur that nonetheless commanded attention, “they show the flow of supplies. Not just food and medicine, Anya, but… other things. Things that were never accounted for in the public reports.” She tapped a page with a trembling finger. “Look at this entry. ‘Project Nightingale.’ It’s listed as ‘recreational equipment.’ But the dates… they coincide with the shortages in the south sector. And the amounts are astronomical.”
Anya leaned closer, tracing the faded ink. Project Nightingale. She remembered the hushed rumors about it, whispers of experimental technology being tested, of resources diverted from where they were most desperately needed. Now, here was tangible proof, tucked away in Maeve’s meticulously kept family records.
